Superintendent's Message

Dear Spartanburg School District Four Family and Community Members:

On behalf of our Board of Trustees, I am pleased to welcome you to Spartanburg School District Four. We are grateful for the support of our families, churches, businesses, and other community members, as we seek to provide outstanding educational opportunities for our students.

We have high expectations for ourselves and our students. Students may expect to be taught and led by highly qualified staff members who demonstrate high integrity, a strong work ethic, and caring attitudes. We believe these traits are important to model for our students. In return, we expect our students to demonstrate respect, perseverance, and compassion for others. The development of these traits will serve our students well, as they move from classrooms to colleges and careers.

As our mission indicates, our purpose is to impact and empower students for the future. In order to accomplish this task, we emphasize academic rigor. This is evident in our students’ achievements. The 2017-18 assessment results indicate District Four students exceeded the state average on every statewide assessment (all subjects) in grades 3 – 8. In addition, Woodruff High School students exceeded the state average on all End of Course assessments and exceeded the state average for the percentage of National Career Readiness Certificates (NCRC) earned. These achievements were accomplished while maintaining the 11th lowest per pupil expenditure in the state, which signifies our commitment to be fiscally responsible to the taxpayers of our district.

Schools in District Four have received many national recognitions and honors. Woodruff Primary School holds accreditation through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Woodruff Elementary School (2015) and Woodruff High School (2005) have been recognized for student achievement and named National Blue Ribbon Schools by the US Department of Education. The 2019 US News & World Report Best High Schools ranked Woodruff High as the #1 high school in Spartanburg County, the #26 best high school in South Carolina, and the #2,676 best high school in the United States.

In addition to the emphasis on academics, we believe students should have opportunities to develop skills in the arts and athletics. We offer a variety of programs to meet our students’ interests with many activities beginning in the early grades. We provide 32 athletic offerings in the upper grades. Five teams were named Region Champions during the 2018-19 school year. We offer outstanding performing and visual arts programs. Our Woodruff High School Marching Band consistently places among the top performing high schools in South Carolina. The visual arts program routinely produces the top senior visual arts students in South Carolina as named by SC Department of Education and the Archibald Rutledge Scholarship program.

Students are more successful in achieving their educational goals in a calm, orderly learning environment. Therefore, we are committed to high expectations for strong discipline that is fairly and consistently administered. Our parents and community appreciate being able to send their children to schools where safety is a priority and where student discipline does not interfere with the teaching and learning process.

Spartanburg School District Four is successful because of the strong support teachers and administrators receive from parents and the community. We appreciate the collaborative spirit we enjoy, as we work together to accomplish our goals for our students. I encourage you to explore our website to become familiar with all District Four has to offer, and contact or visit us if we can ever be of service.
