Welcome Back

I am looking forward to the 2008 – 2009 school year at Woodruff High School and expect it to be a year of excellence in Calculus.  Many of the topics we will cover this year are difficult.  For this reason two things are essential: timely completion of all assignments and obtaining the appropriate help when needed.  I will be available to provide this extra help if and only if you meet me halfway by participating in class, taking good notes, completing all assignments to the best of your ability and studying outside the classroom.

Materials

  • large three ring binder

  • lots of loose leaf paper

  • eraser

  • pencils / pens (various colors)

  • 4 AAA batteries

  • graphing calculator - recommended not required (TI-83 Plus or higher)

    • individual calculators (TI-84 Plus) will be issued to students for use during the school year

Classwork

You will most likely have some form of classwork every day.  As much class time as possible will be devoted to working on this assignment; however, you will need to complete unfinished problems for homework.  During class I will be available to help you and answer your questions; you should attempt new problems or difficult problems first, that way you will go home with most of the “hard” work completed.  A full understanding of each assignment assures test mastery.

Grading

Major Tests, AP Practice Exams, Projects, Homework Tests…       60%

Quizzes, AP Sample Questions…                                                 30%

Participation, Daily Assignments, Homework...                              10%

Rules for Student Conduct:

  • Attend regularly.  When you are absent, you are  responsible for finding out what you missed and making up that work.  Notes and examples should be copied from a classmate.  Quizzes, tests and other graded material should be made up within a five-day period.  Work that is not completed in a timely fashion will be given a grade of zero.  If you are absent the day of a previously announced test or quiz, you must take the test or quiz on the day you return to school.

  • Prepare for class.  Classwork/homework will be assigned almost every day.

  • Bring necessary materials to class.

  • Be on time.  Be seated and ready to begin work when the tardy bell rings.

  • Copy all notes and examples unless you are told otherwise.

  • Participate in class in an orderly and mature manner.  You will be working independently as well as in small groups.  "Learning noise" must be kept to a minimum.

  • Respect.  If you respect, then you will be respected.  Treat everyone and everything in the classroom with the utmost respectIf it is not yours, do not act like it is yours.

  • Know and follow all rules in the student handbook.

  • Continue to work on your CALCULUS assignment until class is dismissed.  If you need help with a problem, raise your hand, then go on to another problem until I can assist you.

  • "I don't know" and "I can't" are not acceptable answers (excuses).

  • Do your part to help keep the classroom neat and clean.

Consequences for Violating Classroom and School Rules:

  • You are entitled to one warning for breaking a classroom rule.

  • After a warning has been given, each time you break a rule, you will be written up on an office referral.

  • In severe cases of breaking the rules you will be sent out of class with a referral to the office.

Procedures for Non-Instructional Activities/Routines:

  • We will discuss homework at the beginning of class.  You are responsible for making the necessary corrections – this will serve as an excellent study guide.

  • Visit the trashcan and pencil sharpener before or after class, during individual work time or during group work.  Do not “shoot” paper or other objects at the trash can.

  • Tests and quizzes should be turned in at the front of the room in the appropriate tray.  Make up work should be turned in to me.  Any other graded material should be turned in as instructed.

  • At the end of class there may be as little as 5 minutes or as great as 30 minutes for you to work on your classwork/homework assignment.  You should spend this time working on your Calculus assignment.  In addition, you should remain seated and quiet until the bell rings or you are dismissed.  No roaming around the classroom or gathering around desks or at the door.
