Welcome Back

I am looking forward to the 2008 – 2009 school year at Woodruff High School and expect it to be a year of excellence in Algebra.  Many of the topics we will cover this year are difficult.  For this reason two things are essential: timely completion of all assignments and obtaining the appropriate help when needed.  I will be available to provide this extra help if and only if you meet me halfway by participating in class, taking good notes, completing all assignments to the best of your ability and studying outside the classroom.

Materials

  • 1 inch three ring binder

  • dividers

  • loose leaf paper

  • pens / pencils

  • ruler / straight edge

  • 4 AAA batteries

  • graphing calculator – recommended not required (TI-83 Plus or higher)

    • a classroom set of (TI-84 Plus) calculators will be available for student use during class

Classwork

You will most likely have some form of classwork every day.  As much class time as possible will be devoted to working on this assignment; however, you will need to complete unfinished problems for homework.  During class I will be available to help you and answer your questions; you should attempt new problems or difficult problems first, that way you will go home with most of the “hard” work completed.  A full understanding of each assignment assures test mastery.

Grading

            Tests                                                                         45%

            Quizzes                                                                     35%

Homework Average, Daily Grades, Participation            20%

Rules for Student Conduct:

  • Attend regularly.  When you are absent, you are responsible for finding out what you missed and making up that work.  Notes and examples should be copied from a classmate.  Quizzes, tests and other graded material should be made up within a five-day period.  Work that is not completed in a timely fashion will be given a grade of zero.  If you are absent the day of a previously announced test or quiz, you must take the test or quiz on the day you return to school.

  • Prepare for class.  Classwork/Homework will be assigned daily.  There will definitely be practice on the current lesson and occasionally there will also be problems from previous lessons. If you do not fully complete your homework you will be given a homework grade of zero and assigned to homework center the following day.

  • Bring necessary materials to class.

  • Be on time.  Be seated, quiet and ready to begin work when the tardy bell rings.

  • Copy all notes and examples unless you are told otherwise.

  • Participate in class in an orderly and mature manner.  You will be working independently as well as in small groups.  "Learning noise" must be kept to a minimum.

  • Respect.  If you respect, you will be respected.  Treat everyone and everything in the classroom with the utmost respect.  If it is not yours, do not act like it is yours.

  • Know and follow all rules in the student handbook.

  • Continue to work on your ALGEBRA I assignment until class is dismissed.  If you need help with a problem, raise your hand, then go on to another problem until I can assist you.

  • "I don't know" and "I can't" are not acceptable answers (excuses).

  • Do your part to help keep the classroom neat and clean.

Consequences for Violating Classroom and School Rules:

  • You are entitled to one warning for breaking a classroom rule.

  • After a warning has been given, each time you break a rule, you will be written up on an office referral.

  •  In severe cases of breaking the rules you will be sent out of class with a referral to the office.

Procedures for None-Instructional Activities/Routines:

  • Upon entering the classroom you will need to retrieve your assigned calculator from the storage box at the back of the classroom.  Before leaving the classroom you will need to return your calculator to the appropriate slot in the storage box.

  • The answers to each homework assignment will be placed on the board at the beginning of class.  Promptly take out your homework and begin checking it for correctness.  During this time I will take attendance and check homework.  If you do not have your homework on your desk when I come around to check, you will be given a homework grade of zero.

  • Visit the trashcan and pencil sharpener before or after class, during individual work time or during group work.  Do not “shoot” paper or other objects at the trash can.

  • All tests and quizzes should be turned in at the front of the room in the appropriate tray.  Make up work should be turned in to me.  Any other graded material should be turned in as instructed.

  •  At the end of class each day there will be some time allowed for you to begin a classwork/homework assignment.  You should spend this time working on your Algebra I assignment not socializing and talking.  In addition, you should remain seated and quiet until the bell rings or you are dismissed.  No roaming around the classroom or gathering around desks or at the door.
