Reading Tournament Guidelines for 2008–2009
|
The Reading Tournament began at Woodruff Elementary School many, many years ago by Mrs. Judy Wyatt. This legacy will continue in her honor.
The Reading Tournament list comes from the South Carolina Children’s Book Award Nominees as selected by The South Carolina Association of School Librarians. Each year, the SCASL committee selects appropriate books for the following categories: Picture Book Award, Children’s Book Award, Junior Book Award, and the Young Adult Book Award. For more information from the SCASL website, please go to: http://www.scasl.net/bookawards.htm
At WES, we use the Children’s Book Award list to promote reading during the school year. Students need to read the books carefully for meaning and comprehension. Each classroom chooses a Reading Tournament team by selecting up to four students from their class that has read the most Reading Tournament books and who will be able to discuss the books in great depth. The Reading Tournament will be held in April. Questions are asked orally and teams are given an opportunity to discuss and respond accordingly. At the end of the Tournament, the team with the highest score is declared the winner and will participate in a pizza lunch to celebrate!
Any student may participate provided they read the books and keep up with a journal. In order to determine whether or not a student has read the RT books, a journal must be kept. RT Journal Guidelines follow below. The better the journal entries with greater detail, the better prepared students will be during tournament time. Please contact Mrs. Prince if you have any questions concerning this process. rprince@spartanburg4.org.
The Reading Tournament Journal Title: Author: Illustrator: Genre: Characters: (give as much detail about each character as possible) Setting: Problem/Conflict: Solution: Connections: (after reading the Reading Tournament books, students need to leave ample space to come back to the Connections section to make text to text connections between the RT books…make connections between problems, characters, plot, setting, genre, time period, conflicts, etc.)
