Mr. Brian Lane has been named Head Football Coach for Woodruff High School in Spartanburg School District Four, following his approval by the District Board of Trustees on JAN 28, 2008. Coach Lane is 31 years of age. His family includes his wife, Kenya, and two sons, BJ, 10 and Jaylin, 5. Most recently, Coach Lane served as Head Football Coach at South Florence High School in Florence School District One, where the team size grew from 57 to 96 participants during his one year tenure. Prior to his position in Florence, Coach Lane served as Offensive Coordinator at his alma mater, Byrnes High School, helping lead the football team to four SC 4A state championships. Coach Lane holds a bachelor’s degree from USC Upstate in Secondary Education-Social Studies. Coach Lane will have teaching duties in addition to his coaching responsibilities. Ms. Karen Neal, Principal of Woodruff High School states “ we are excited to have Coach Lane come to Woodruff High School and look forward to his leadership in continuing the Wolverine Tradition and leading us to a state football championship.” Mr. Scott Lawson, Athletic Director for Spartanburg School District Four states that Coach Lane “is highly respected throughout South Carolina as a football coach who brings out the best in his players and all those around him.”
Coach Bobby Bentley, Head Football Coach at Presbyterian College and former Head Football Coach at Byrnes High School expresses that “one of my sons is named after Coach Lane and his family. I am ecstatic about Coach Lane coming to Woodruff.” Mr. Mike Watts, an alumnus of Woodruff High School and current Athletic Director at South Florence High School said “Coach Lane has an outstanding football mind. I recommended him highly to my alma mater. Given the opportunity, we would hire Coach Lane again.” Dr. Scott Turner, Superintendent of Spartanburg School District Five during Coach Lane’s tenure at Byrnes High School commented that Coach Lane is “an excellent teacher who students loved. He is a tremendous football coach, very knowledgeable of the game, and was a key component of the offense during the string of state championships. Woodruff is very fortunate to have such a fine person as its new football coach.” Former Woodruff High School Head Football Coach Freddie Brown, Jr., whose son is on the University of South Carolina football team, states “Coach Lane's influence on my son as a person and an athlete was instrumental in him flourishing in all aspects of life. Woodruff football is in capable hands that can take it to the highest level."
