2009 Most Improved Student

 

In naming his 2009 Most Improved Student, Mr. Saunders stated that this student "symbolizes for teachers why we answered the call to serve in the field of education - the power to help young people learn and mature into productive citizens of a global community." Bobby was selected from the Honors British Literature Class as a student who "synthesized all the resources at his disposal to grasp the purpose and meaning behind great works of literature."

Meet Mr. Saunders

A life-long learner, Mr. Saunders earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Social Studies Education from Bluefield College in Bluefield , Virginia . He also earned a Master’s degree from Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest , North Carolina . In addition, he has taken post graduate courses at The University of Virginia and Converse College . Most recently, Mr. Saunders earned his National Board Certification in Adolescence and Young Adulthood English Language Arts. National board certification is considered the highest credential in the teaching profession. Mr. Saunders is certified by the South Carolina Department of Education to teach English Language Arts, Social Studies and Advanced Placement English Language.

     Prior to teaching in South Carolina , Saunders taught at William Monroe Middle School in Greene County , Virginia . The Virginia native has taught English at South China Normal University in Guangzhou , China . This is Mr. Saunders' seventh year of teaching British literature at Woodruff High School .

     A former design editor, Mr. Saunders is a published author. In his spare time, he enjoys reading biographies, mysteries and historical literature.

     The Woodruff High teacher is married to Kathy Merrill Saunders, a teacher with Greenville County Schools. The couple resides in Greer. Mr. Saunders was recognized for his leadership in education and his commitment to WHS students by being named Woodruff High School ’s Teacher of the Year in 2004-2005.
